Sore throat with the onset of cold weather?

Scarf not enough? Here's how to cure and prevent sore throat.

Scarf, hat and coat... but despite everything you already feel that your throat is burning? In winter it is not a rare symptom, because the cold favors the discomfort of the oropharyngeal cavity. But why? What are the best remedies but, above all, how can you prevent a sore throat?

Here are some useful tips to help you cope with the cold season!

Why does cold cause sore throat ?

A cold is a cause of sore throat, there is no doubt about that. The mucociliary apparatus of the upper respiratory tract is, in fact, one of the most important defense systems of the body, and when the air cools, it has two negative effects:

- The temperature of the nasal cavity drops and consequently viruses and bacteria find fertile ground to take root and move throughout the body.

- The thermoregulation system of the respiratory system is altered, which causes a decrease in the vascularization of the vibrating cilia, which in the throat, with their coordinated movement, trap and eliminate pathogens or inflammatory agents.

Something similar also occurs with sudden changes in temperature, such as during the transition from a warm environment to a cold one (a situation that occurs, for example, when we leave the house), with consequences for the thermoregulation system, that is, the ability to maintain body temperature.

The result? A burning throat, because it becomes irritated and red due to inflammation of viral or bacterial origin, which can affect various anatomical structures of the oropharyngeal cavity.

Three Remedies:

To treat infection and relieve inflammation of the throat, it is important to identify the causes and then act on the symptoms.

The most effective remedies are:

1. Antiseptics. They act by eliminating the microbial load that causes inflammation.

2. Anti-inflammatory. They reduce pain and discomfort related to inflammation.

3. Antibiotic. When a sore throat is a symptom of a bacterial infection, an antibiotic should only be taken under medical prescription, which is useless and contraindicated in the case of a viral infection.

How to avoid sore throat ?

Autumn and winter viruses are always lurking. Below I will show you some small tips to avoid or reduce the probability of suffering from these symptoms:

- No smoking.

- Avoid spicy foods and hot drinks.

- Protect the throat from the cold and drafts.

- Keep your throat hydrated.

- Avoid environments with particularly dry or humid air.

- Observe basic hygiene rules.

Also, remember to regularly eat foods rich in vitamin C, which is a real panacea for the immune system, and, if necessary, take immunostimulating supplements.
