Melanin is a natural pigment that gives color to the skin. Hormonal changes, aging and excessive exposure to sunlight can cause skin irritation. Excessive exposure to sunlight can lead to increased production and cause hyperpigmentation, which manifests itself in the form of dark areas and age spots (also known as sun spots).
